A New Investment Paradigm: Multi-Gen Needs vs Modern Portfolio Theory Shortcomings” | |

Description: The era of extraordinary interest rates since the Great Recession of 2008 has fueled broad gains in asset prices globally – cheap money and the search for return have compressed risk premiums and elevated asset prices. But the prospect of a slowdown in global growth now leaves few options for monetary authorities to stimulate economic demand and the excess returns that investors can expect for assuming risk are compressing. This potential paradigm shift will create unique challenges moving forward as investors will either need to settle for lower returns or continue to elevate the risk in their portfolios. Now put that thought into the context of multi-generational wealth management. Largely, the wealth management business has adopted theoretical approaches which have been relied upon by large institutional pools of capital who generally only have a singular need – to fund long term obligations. However, the unique needs of a multi-generational family approach to portfolio construction has always called for a differentiated asset allocation framework. Families face competing needs and goals within their multi-generational portfolios and these are better addressed through a sound “risk-allocation” framework as opposed to what Modern Portfolio Theory can deliver.
